What are Bextra & Celebrex?
FDA says COX-2 inhibitors are unsafe
Are you at risk?
".those treated with Bextra were more likely to have heart attacks, strokes and blood clots in their legs and lungs than those who didn't take the drug."

Bextra and Celebrex, like Vioxx, were developed to treat the signs and symptoms of arthritis and menstrual cramping. Like other COX-2 inhibitors, they work by blocking a natural enzyme associated with the pain of arthritis. The drug manufacturers originally designed these drugs to target the sources of arthritis and menstrual pain without damaging the stomach lining as much as aspirin or ibuprofen.
However, researchers are now discovering that COX-2 inhibitors also block a system in the heart that helps keep arteries free of blockage.
In September 2004, Merck pulled Vioxx from the market, citing an increased risk of heart problems. Many patients immediately switched to Bextra or Celebrex, thinking that the drugs were safe. Unfortunately, recent studies and reports are showing that Bextra and Celebrex may be no more safe than Vioxx, and that the risks may be just as serious
Early FDA says COX-2 inhibitors are unsafe
At a November 18, 2004 Senate hearing, David Graham, a reviewer for the FDA, named Bextra as one of the five drugs he believed carried serious health risks:
| A study of more than 1,500 cardiac-surgery patients found that those treated with Bextra were more likely to have heart attacks, strokes and blood clots in their legs and lungs than those who didn't take the drug. |
Graham also denounced Pfizer's safety research methods as "junk science."
Pfizer only recently announced they will investigate any negative cardiac effects that Bextra might have but that they would continue to run ads for the drug. Hank McKinnell, Pfizer's CEO, said in a December 6th interview that even if studies showed definitive proof of cardiovascular risk he might not withdraw the drug.
Because many of the new studies specific to Bextra have not yet concluded, exact statistics regarding the dangers associated with the drug have not been released. University of Minnesota pharmacy professor David Guay says that it's only a matter of time before the reports on Bextra come in and it is removed from the market. "We saw which way the data was pointing. We sounded the alarm more than two years ago - but no one listens."
